If Jack plans to change from a system that docks marks for late assignments to one that creates solutions for the problems that students faced and the reasons that certain students could not hand in their project on time, he will have to realize that it will be a lot more work and take a lot more time and thought to come up with solutions. Rather than just docking marks and having that be the motivation for students to hand their assignments in, he will now have to try to individually motivate the students, and as the vignette said, the reasons for late assignments are as different as the students themselves, so it will require a huge amount on input. Having students come in at lunch until they are done the assignment can be a way to help the student, but for some students it can also be an “out” from having to go outside. Another way is to have them stay after school, but this poses a potential problem for those who ride the bus or use public transportation.
