Vignette 1

My reaction to Natasha’s Advice is that I totally agree with her. I feel that inflating the students mark based on personal beliefs should not be done in any case. A case such as this where the teacher is so proud of the student and how they have progressed should absolutely be reflected to the student, just not in the way of artificially boosting the grade. The question that is automatically posed in my mind when situations like this occur is: What if it was the opposite? What if the student was a menace in the room and caused daily problems and also distracted the other students, yet was achieving at an “A” level? Is it reasonable to reduce the mark to a “B” because of how you feel? I think that this is absolutely not appropriate. Grades measure how the student is doing in regards to the curriculum objectives and it will cause major problems down the road if marks are given for other reasons. Other ways that the teacher in the given scenario could give feedback are to send frequent emails or set up a time that weekly phone calls or meetings can be held with the teacher and the parent, teacher and the student, both, or all of these meetings. This would allow for feedback to be given in a very effective manner.
