My advice to the teacher in this example would be to either consider an alternate career, or to put the time and effort necessary into teaching. He needs to first off develop rubrics, which should be clear, concise, and outline what the student needs to do to achieve success on the assignment, as well as develop a marking breakdown for his class. Without these things the marking is absolutely unreliable. The rubrics need to tie directly to the outcomes that Alberta Ed has laid out in order to properly assess and educate the student. Automated marks programs can be useful, because they make mark entering more efficient, but the program used needs to be very customizable to be truly effective. An issue with them is that most schools use PC computers, poorly developed PC software, and do not create reliable backups, so I feel that marks should be either written down somewhere else, backups should be made, or an Apple computing device should be used.
